The equipment comprises a vessel with one or more inlets, a discharge port for leaves and other foreign bodies, an outlet for filtered water, and one or more separating units extending obliquely across it. Each unit (13) consists of two or more cascades (7). Each of the latter has a run-off surface (8), joining in the flow direction of the water via a radiused portion (9) and a return surface (10). Each separating unit can be at an angle (a) of 15 to 45 deg to the vertical, while the run-off surface can be at a flatter angle. The angle (B) of the return surface can be between 50 and 160 deg and preferably 100 deg approximately.
