PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a bright whiteness degree with a low voltage by composing at least one of substrate surfaces of many horizontally oriented areas with different orientations, and varying a light scattering degree of a liquid crystal layer according to ups and downs of voltages. SOLUTION: Oriented films 7a, 8a, 8b formed on an upper substrate 1 and a lower substrate 2 are horizontally oriented films, and on the oriented films 7a, 8a of them, liquid crystal molecules 41 are oriented in parallel with the space and vertically oriented on the oriented film 8b. Therefore, there exist many areas where the liquid crystal molecules are differently oriented and there exist also many boundaries of the areas with different refraction indexes, and incident light 13 is scattered on the boundaries, part of it is absorbed, and the remainder is reflected to the front and looks white (a). Here in a voltage impression area 11, the liquid crystal molecules 41 are uniformly oriented approximately perpendicular to the upper and lower substrate surfaces. Therefore, most of the incident light 13b reaches an optical absorber (blackbody) as transmitted light 15 without being scattered and is absorbed therein, and a black display is obtained. |
