摘要 <p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable length coding circuit with small power consumption by reducing a capacity of a memory for a code presence discrimination table to decrease an access frequency to the memory and reducing a capacity of a memory for a code table accessed at once. SOLUTION: The circuit is provided with a 1st area discrimination circuit 12 and a 2nd area discrimination circuit 13 that check the assignment of a code with respect to run data and level data in pairs prior to referencing a code presence discrimination table 14. In the case that it is not required to refer the code presence discrimination table 14, the reading of the code presence discrimination table 14 is stopped, a code table is made up of a 1st code table 16 that corresponds to run data and level data in pairs where the run data or the level data are zero and made up of a 2nd code table 17 that corresponds to run data and level data in pairs where both of the run data and the level data are not zero. Then the reading of either of the code tables 16, 17 not requiring referring to is stopped by the discrimination result of the 1st area discrimination circuit 12, the 2nd area discrimination circuit 13 and the code presence discrimination table 14.</p>
