The vehicle identification system makes use of an identification unit (11) placed in the vehicle (10) to send a signal to a receiver associated with the fuel delivery pump. The vehicle unit carries vehicle identification data and the identity of the subscriber, who has a payment agreement with the fuel supplier. The data is received by the pump unit and recorded along with the price of fuel taken from the pump, and delivered to a payment calculator (30), which automatically bills the subscriber or collects payment from a pre-paid fund. This avoids the need for the driver of the vehicle to cross the apron, wait to pay then return to their vehicle.
