PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to embody a change in luminance within one pixel without entailing the change in hue of a reflection type liquid crystal display element utilizing the selective reflection of cholesteric liquid crystals, thereby lessening the degradation in apparent repolution by use of an area gradation technique. SOLUTION: Electrodes 3, 4 are respectively formed on one side of electrodes 1, 2 and two selective reflection layers 5, 5' consisting of the cholesteric liquid crystals 7, 7' are respectively laminated between these electrodes 3 and 4. The cholesteric liquid crystals 7, 7' respectively selectively reflect the circularly polarized light of the same wavelength varying in rotating directions and vary in the intensity of the threshold electric field intensity which gives rise to a change of reflectivity. As a result, the voltage to be impressed between the electrodes 3 and 4 is changed to three ways of values, by which the luminance changes of ideally three stages 100%, 50% and 0% in reflectivity without entailing the change of the hue relating to the selectively reflected colors are obtd. |
