A unit for draining liquids with materials in a suspension or concentrating sludge at an urban or industrial purification plant consists of a housing containing a rotary auger over a trough formed from trapezoid section bars, with the apertures between the bars lying parallel to the axis of the auger. The auger has a variable pitch and incorporates a brush or other fixed seal on its edge to ensure a close contact between the auger and the grille and at the same time cleans the grille's inner surface. A tank beneath the grille to receive the filtrate can be equipped with a partition to retain a certain volume of material, while the remainder is allowed to flow towards the outlet end of the unit.
