A novel aqueous binder consists of a mixture of slag cement powder, a magnesium ion source, a phosphate ion source and water, the magnesium content being 2.5-75% (by wt. of binder) and the phosphate/magnesium wt. ratio being 1-4. Preferably, the magnesium ion source is magnesium oxide or hydroxide, dolomite or a magnesium salt and the phosphate ion source is phosphoric acid or sodium, potassium, calcium or magnesium phosphate. Also claimed is a process for consolidation and stabilisation of scrap batteries by grinding the batteries, optionally magnetically removing iron and incorporating the ground material into the above binder, preferably in a binder/ground material wt. ratio of 0.175-1.5. Further claimed are consolidated and stabilised scrap batteries obtained by the above process.
