The waterer, made from a supple plastic material or terracotta, is in the form of a rectangular tray (2) with a slot (3) for the stem of the plant and a raised edge (1) to retain the water. It can also be used in conjunction with a cover to give protection to plants from frost and wind. Both tray and cover can be made from a thermally-shaped or injection-moulded plastic material, such as ABS, polystyrene, polypropylene or polyethylene, and in this case the perforations allowing water to pass through can be made by the user with a sharp implement, the size and number of holes depending on watering requirements. The holes can also be fitted with plugs of open-cell foam to create a droplet watering system. Improved control of watering without uncovering roots, and prevents weed growth round plants.
