VARIABLE LENGTH CODING AND DECODING METHOD AND SYSTEM THEREFOR

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the coding efficiency of a variable length code. SOLUTION: A variable length code set is stored in a variable length code table 5 in a coder. An event at a preceding time outputted from a delay element 2 is given to a frequency calculation section 4, each variable length code stored in the variable length code table 5 and each event are cross-referenced depending on the frequency of incidence of each event and the result is outputted. In a coding section 8, a received event 1 is cross-referenced with a variable length code by using a cross reference table 7 between each variable length code and each event outputted from the frequency calculation section 4 and a variable length code 9 is outputted as coded data. In a decoder, a decoding section 12 decodes the variable length code 9 by using similarly a cross reference table 15 between each variable length code and each event outputted from a frequency calculation section 14 and provides an output of a decoded event 13.
