A composition and method are disclosed for sweetening gaseous or liquid hydrocar bons, aqueous systems and mixtures thereof with a non-regenerative scavenger having th e chemical formula <IMG> wherein n is an integer from 1 to 6 and R1, R2, R3 and R4 are independently sele cted as straight chain or branched alkyl groups containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, ar yl groups. alkylaryl groups, heterocyclic groups, cycloalkyl groups, or (CH2)n-OR5 groups with R5 being hydrogen or an alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms and n b eing an integer from 1 to 6. Alternatively. R1 and R2 may be linked together and R3 a nd R4 may be linked together to form alkylene rings having from 4 to 5 carbon atoms.
