PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent communication in a ring from infringing on standard decided out of the ring and to simplify it by allocating a conversion means for converting a data byte group which can be used by the header of an ATM cell into an identifier that is partially and reversibly peculiar to a line network to at least one network interface. SOLUTION: A local area network operating at an asynchronous transmission mode ATM is provided with four terminal stations 1-4 connected to a ring network through the interfaces 5-8 of the line network. Data link between one of terminal station groups 1-4 and a receiver terminal station in the network is always established in accordance with an ATM transmission method. The interface 5 of the network is allocated again to the desired terminal station groups 1a, 1b and 1c with the resolution function of a multiplex/resolution unit 20 enabling the engagement of the ATM cell groups to the ring connection of the interface 5 of the network from the plural terminal stations 1a, 1b and 1c connected to the interface 5.
