摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liq. crystal optical device not deteriorating the grade of a displayed image even when it is kept under applied voltage or no voltage for a long time by dispersing a polymer resin in a non-threshold smectic liq. crystalline material. SOLUTION: A light controlling layer 6 consisting of 100 pts.wt. smectic liq. crystalline material 4 forming a liq. crystal layer whose optical axis varies continuously to applied voltage and 0.01-10 pts.wt. polymer resin 5 is held between two substrates 1 with electrodes 2 to obtain the objective liq. crystal optical device. At least one of the substrates is transparent. Since spontaneous polarization can be suppressed in the liq. crystalline material 4, the device can be driven without requiring large electric charges or putting load on an active element such as TFT. The electro-optical characteristics of the device are hardly deteriorated even when the device is kept under applied voltage for a long time or it is allowed to stand under no voltage for a long time. The device can maintain satisfactory grade of a displayed image for a long time in the case of incorporation into a display device.
