A temperature-compensated pressure transmitter (6) is positioned to avoid build-up of residue. Depth of liquid is measured by a tuning-fork type sensor (7) that is relatively insensitive to the fluid type. Depth and pressure enable specific gravity, and hence the weight and volume of the load at any instance, to be calculated electronically. Corrections are applied to compensate for solid residues on the tank bottom and sides, the angle of tilt of the tank trailer and pressure applied by the pump (9) during loading.
