A cylinder (1) contains two opposed pistons (11,12), and each piston drives a separate crankshaft (13,14). The cylinder may consist of two parts screwed together. The rotation of the two crankshafts is transmitted via a transmission to a drive shaft. The cylinder is without a conventional head. Intake (3) and exhaust valves (4), spark plugs (10) or injection nozzles, are positioned in the centre of the longitudinal reinforced cylinder axis. Positioning of spark plugs and injection nozzles is the same for two-stroke and four-stroke engines.
