SPRAY GUN FOR APPLYING FIBER-REINFORCED RESINS

A novel spray gun for applying fiber-reinforced resins with ceramic fiber loadings of at least 55 wt-%. The spray gun (10) has an inlet (24) for admitting fiber-reinforced resin; an air inlet (30) for atomizing the resin; a catalyst inlet (26); and an outlet (32) for expelling catalyzed fiberreinforced resin. The gun (10) also has a straight-line channel communicating with the resin inlet (24), the catalyst inlet (26), and the outlet. An actuator selectively controls admission of the resin and the catalyst into the gun. The air inlet (30) admits air into the straight-line channel at an acute angle with and in the direction of flow in the channel and is located after both the resin inlet (24) and the catalyst inlet (26). The apparatus also includes a tank (38) housing the resin; a pump (56) for the resin; a tank (58) housing the catalyst; a pump (60) for the catalyst; and an atomizing air supply in communication with the air inlet.
