<p>A gelling or emulsifying agent prepared by mixing a water-swellable clay mineral with a quaternary ammonium salt base cationic surfactant and a fatty acid or higher alcohol that is liquid at ordinary temperatures; and gel or emulsion compositions made by using the same. The use of this agent makes it possible to convert various oil components into gel or emulsion compositions excellent in stability, safety and usability. The gel or emulsion compositions made by using the agent are favorably usable as bases for cosmetics, quasi drugs or the like. Further, sunscreen preparations comprising the above emulsion compositions and ultraviolet screening powders are excellent in tight adhesion to the skin and water resistance and exhibit such excellent usability that the unnatural whiteness due to the ultraviolet screening powder is not conspicuous even when the skin sweats or is brought into contact with water during the action in the sea or a pool. Accordingly, a necessary amount of an ultraviolet screening powder can be added without worry about the unnatural whiteness, which is advantageous in the case wherein particularly high ultraviolet screening effect is desired.</p> |
