A method of drilling a hole in a ferromagnetic workpiece and removing chips from the hole comprises stopping a drill at the pre-selected depth of hole, withdrawing the magnetized drill, rotating the drill after it clears the work, and applying a stream of fluid under pressure to the drill, whilst rotating the latter. A programme controlled drilling machine comprises a superposed table 16 for work 18, a tool head 14 movable on guides 12 by a screw 26, a tool turret 20 carrying permanently magnetized drills 24 and an air blast 24. In a modification, Fig. 4, the drill 24 is magnetized by a coil 40 after the hole has been drilled, and is deenergized after the drill is withdrawn from the hole.</p> |
