An ion exchange membrane electrolyser for the electrolysis of aqueous solution of electrolytes made of elementary cells each comprising a pair of elements and a pair of peripheral gaskets with an ion exchange membrane positioned in-between. The elements (1) comprising: (a) a pair of sheets with a peripheral flange (3) suitable for engaging a gaskets; (b) projections (2) in the sheets having a planar top and vertical depressions; (c) a support frame interposed between the flanges of the two sheets; (d) conductive elements (18) fixed to a support sheet (20) which is integral with the support frame for the electrical connection of each projection of a sheet with the corresponding projection of the other sheet. The conductive elements being welded to the projection planar tops; (e) elongated tiles vertically positioned over the depressions to form downcoming ducts; (f) a baffle (7) on the upper part of each sheet close to but not in contact with the internal edge of the peripheral flange to provide a space for liquid-gaseous phase separation and provided with connection holes at each depression for returning exhausted aqueous solutions and the electrolysis products; (g) a distributor for feeding the electrolyte aqueous solution around the projections positioned in the lower part of each sheet along the internal edge of the peripheral flange; (h) vertical downcoming ducts (9) for the discharge of the returning exhausted aqueous solutions and electrolysis products; (i) expanded sheets (14)(16) of mesh with hexagonal openings connected to the planar surface of the projections of each sheet. The expanded sheets being provided with an electrocatalytic film for the electrochemical reaction. Also claimed are electrolysers with cylindrical conductive elements fixed to a sheet, with conductive elements cold pressed in a conductive sheet and with U-shaped supports inserted between the expanded sheets and projection planar surfaces and with U-shaped projections manufactured separately and fixed to the sheets with lateral baffles for electrolyte mixing. |
