The coin operated lock for supermarket trolleys has varying types of coupling key (3), whose shape (4) is matched to corresponding locking spheres (2,2a,2b), which are moved into and out of the key opening (1). Only matching key and sphere enable a locking process to occur. The coin container of a coin lock contains a chamber (7) in which spheres of differing diameters can be positioned, while coupling keys have corresponding cut outs of corresponding size to ensure that only the correct key sphere combination works. An alternative arrangement with the same goal is use of coded keys
