A cooler for a gas to be measured, comprises a gas inlet, a gas outlet, a condensate outlet, a cooling line, and a cooling unit. The cooling line has at least two cooling stages through which the gas passes, and each can be at a different temperature. The cooling stages are cooled using different methods of heat transport between the measured gas and the surroundings. In at least one cooling stage, the measured gas is cooled without the use of heat pump devices.
