The extra bandwidth of a fiber optic sensor is suitably appropriated to determine the integrity of a sensor. The present apparatus preferably consists of a means for finding the amplitude of the noise within the chosen frequency range which preferably includes one of several types of signal processors. Once the amplitude of noise is suitably determined from the sensor's output, the computed amplitude is suitably compared to pre-established upper and lower noise bounds. If the noise amplitude falls outside these bounds, a flag or interrupt is set to notify the system processor or other monitoring device of the sensor failure.
