Apparatus for variable length coding

The apparatus for the coding of data of variable length has a memory (14) used to store information indicating if a code is within a given range of data values. The data values are a combination of cycle data and level data and it is determined if an actual pair of cycle data and level data is included in given range. When confirmation is obtained that the data is within the range a coding process (15,16,17) is initiated. Output is made to a pair of code tables (16,17).
