A thin muffler having openings through which air can circulate to discharge the heat of noise generating apparatus, the openings not impairing the soundproofing performance, comprising a muffler body (1) having a front surface and rear surface having a plurality of openings (2) made through it in the thickness direction, and within each opening (2) are formed a plurality of hollow chambers (3a, 3b, 3c) of different volumes, communicating with one another. Each opening (2) is formed continuously of a plurality of recesses differing from each other in cross section, and the hollow chambers (3a, 3b, 3c) are defined by partitions (6a, 6b) each having a through hole. The hollow chambers (3a, 3b, 3c) may be arranged in the ascending order of volume from the front surface toward the rear surface. The muffler may also include a tube (11) inserted into through holes (7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) and having a plurality of holes communicating with the respective hollow chambers. The muffler may further include a device (16) for generating vibration to slightly vibrate part of the walls of the hollow chambers (3a, 3b, 3c). Around each opening (2) in the muffler body may be provided a through hole (19) having no hollow chambers (3a, 3b, 3c).
