<p>A mobile station (106) in a code division multiple access (CDMA) communication system is instructed to transmit a temporary message which is used to aid in inter-frequency hard handoff. A source base-station (102) transmits to the mobile station (106) a power-up message which includes a power level relative to the nominal power of the mobile station (106) and frequency at which the mobile station (106) is to transmit the temporary message. Target base-stations (102) receive the temporary message and report characteristics of the temporary message to the source base-station (102) for handoff determination.</p> |
