Surface measurement of esp. textile fabrics to determine weave density

The properties of a flat or slightly curved surface, esp. a woven textile, leather or surface of a workpiece, are sampled by illuminating a point and measuring the reflected light with a detector which only accepts light from a point region and senses the two dimensional coordinates of that region. The brightness values and their coordinates are stored in a computer as a three dimensional profile so that the height profile of the sample is determined.
