The cold room temperature is normally maintained between two values, due to the switching of the system by a thermostat, the higher value being determined by the requirements of the stored goods and being such that ice builds up, reducing the performance of the system. A heater is used to melt the ice at regular intervals, but to prevent the temperature rising too far the heating is preceded by a cooling phase reducing the temperature to compensate. The cold room temperature is held between two values (TH,TN) the higher of which is suitable for storage of the room contents. During a period (1) in which the refrigeration system is off the temperature rises ( DELTA TN) at which value the system is switched on by the controlling thermostat. In order to remove ice from the evaporator a heater is activated which would raise the temperature above the upper limit ( DELTA TAB). To prevent this undesirable increase the system reduces the temperature to a lower level (TT) prior to the heater being activated.
