The filler (7) is driven around at least two deflectors (11,12) by a drive mechanism (13), and has an upsetting appliance (14) with at least one upsetting element (15) for upsetting a package (3) conveyed by the filler. The insertion unit (4) affects the upsetting part (16) included by the upsetting appliance. The upsetting appliance is in the form of a belt (26) running around two further deflectors (24,25). A plate (27), running transversely to the belt, serves as an upsetting element and protrudes from the belt to which it is joined.
