Recovery of gas mixtures containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide comprises reacting carbon and hydrocarbons at high temperatures with superheated steam or reaction gases containing steam in a melt made of alkali(ne earth) hydroxides. Also claimed is the apparatus for carrying out the process comprising; a reactor (1), a dosing device (2), measuring device (3), scrubbing column (5), drying apparatus (6), compressor (7), and gasometer (8). The reactor contains a system of connecting pipes and the melt is rotated in the reactor and gases produced can be fed counter currently to the flow direction.
