PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide anαtype stirling engine capable of carrying out operation under a low temperature heat source. SOLUTION: A piston 2 and a piston 9 are arranged opposing to each other, and a connecting rod 3 of the piston 2 is connected to a crank mechanism 5. A connecting rod 10 of the piston 9 is slidably inserted into the piston 2 and a container 19, and is connected to the crank mechanism 5. In anαtype stirling engine, a phase difference between the piston 2 and the piston 9 is set to about 150 degrees in a crank angle. In the case where low temperature hot water (for example, about 100 deg.C) is set as a heat source, an output which is not taken out beforehand can be taken out. A cooler 16, a regenerating heat exchanger 17, and a heater 18 are interposed between a cylinder liner 12 and a cylinder liner 13, and thereby, it is possible to reduce a dead space sharply so as to improve an output sharply.
