PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject high-purity compound useful as an intermediate raw material for various industrial materials such as a resin for resists in high yield at a low cost by reacting a styrene derivative with a monocarboxylic acid anhydride in the presence of an aliphatic carboxylic acid. SOLUTION: A styrene derivative represented by formula I [R<1> is H or methyl; R<2> is H, a 1-4C alkyl or a 1-4C alkoxy; R<3> to R<5> are each a 1-4C alkyl; (n) is 0-4] (o-t-butoxystyrene, m-t-butoxystyrene, etc., are cited as preferred examples) is reacted with a monocarboxylic acid anhydride such as acetic anhydride in the presence of an aliphatic carboxylic acid (preferably formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid or oxalic acid) usually at 20-300 deg.C, preferably 30-250 deg.C usually for <=72 hr to afford the objective compound represented by formula II [R' is H, a 1-4C alkyl, a 1-4C alkoxyl or C(=O)R; R is an organic group derived from the monocarboxylic acid anhydride]. |
