Press wheels are used for rolling over and packing the soil of seed furrows. Spl it press wheels have an axial gap, and are used when the crop is of the kind that f ares best when the soil actually over the seeds is loose. The cap is in two component s, which together encircle the split press wheel. When in place, the cap closes the gap, and the split press wheel then functions like a one-piece press wheel. The two components are releasable, being fastened together by bolts. The bolts lie in deformed recesses in the cap, encroaching into the gap, internally of the cap. T he act of tightening the bolts stretches the cap over the wheel, whereby the cap gr ips the wheel, and no mechanical connection to the wheel is required.
