PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a metal working oil which is excellent in lubricating properties such as oiliness and wear resistance and which does not adversely affect the coagulating sedimentation in waste water treatment by selecting a polyether compd. having at least one carboxyl or carboxylate group or a phosphoric ester (salt) group as a metal working oil. SOLUTION: The polyether compd. is represented by formula I (wherein R<1> is a 1-22C hydrocarbon group; R<2> is H or 1-6C alkyl; A<1> is 2-4C alkylene; X is 0, S, NR<2> CO, or NR<2> ; M is an alkali or alkaline earth metal, a quaternary ammonium, or an amine salt; m is 10-300; n is 1-6; and y is 1-4) or by formula II (wherein R3 is 1-22C hydrocarbon group; R<4> is H or 1-6C alkyl; Q is PO3 M, CH2 COOM, etc.; X is O, S, etc.; A<2> is 3-4C alkylene; M is the same as in formula I; p is 0 or 1-40; q is 10-300; and z is 1-6). |
