PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a uniform fine whisker by forming a potassium titanate whisker, composed of a specified single composition and having specified values or below of average fiber length and average fiber diameter and a specified value or above of aspect ratio. SOLUTION: This fine whisker is composed of a single composition represented by the formula mK2 O.nTiO2 .xH2 O [(m) is 0 or 1; (n) is 1, 4, 6 or 8; (x) is 0-10] and has <=5μm average fiber length, <=0.3μm average fiber diameter and >=10 aspect ratio. The fine whisker is produced by mixing one or more of an antase type or a rutile type TiO2 and Ti compounds capable of producing the TiO2 by heating such as Ti(OH)4 with one or more of K2 O and K compounds capable of producing the K2 O such as K2 CO3 in amounts so as to provide 1-10 molar ratio of TiO2 /K2 O and further about 5-80 pts.wt. KCl based on 100 pts.wt. TiO2 and a metallic oxide such as MgO in an amount of about 0.01-40 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. TiO2 , then baking the resultant mixture at a temp. of 870-970 deg.C, subsequently cooling the baked aggregate, dispersing the cooled aggregate in water, separating the resultant whisker by filtration and drying the separated whisker.
