Apparatus for measuring living cell characteristics comprises an electronic control (6) connected to opto-sensors (4) and a number of separate light sources (5,5.1) forming an illumination system (5). Structured switching of the illumination (5) together with structured scanning of the sensors (4) together with an external signal processor (7) give geometric and/or biochemical data regarding the living cells (3).
