A heating device for a practice target, which is heated in order to produce a thermal image with the aid of a heat source which produces a gaseous heated medium, the heat source being initiated and/or interrupted by means of a control device (3), at least one pyrotechnic charge (2) which produces hot gas being used as the heat source, and it being possible to influence the thermal capacity and/or burning duration of the pyrotechnic charge (2) by means of its size and/or shape.
