Ignition timing control method for an internal combustion engine

The method involves the primary winding (3) of an ignition coil (4) being supplied from a battery (Vb) and the current being measured by an electronic unit (6). The ignition circuit is switched on and off by a power transistor (2) governed by a microcontroller (1). The microcontroller receives actual time/current data from the electronic unit and has a memory (12) which stores a simple three straight line provisional time/current characteristic for the ignition circuit. The electronic unit only signals between current thresholds and these with the corresponding known times are used to modify the provisional stored characteristic. This is then employed to give the actual ignition circuit interruption time to produce a particular required ignition current.
