The internal wall of a container rotatably mounted about a substantially horizontal axis is protected by the formation of a wear-resistant layer of the material being treated. In an apparatus for aerating fermenting and self-communication of organic refuse, a cylindrical drum 1 has longitudinal ribs 10 which are suitably spaced to retain between them a layer 11 of the material; in a continuous discharge apparatus the circumferential spacing of the ribs may increase towards the discharge end. The ribs 10 may be bolted directly to the container or fabricated from or attached to plates 13 which may be held against the container wall by retaining rings and screws 14, 15. Alternatively, the ribs may be formed as grids,Fig. 17,whichmavbe assembled by bayonet joints (Fig. 6, not shown) or welded or bolted together and may be retained in the container by folding wedges 20, elliptical wedges 21, retainer bars 32 and bolts 34, retainer bars forced apart by wedge-headed screws, (Figs. 11 and 12, not shown) or welding.
