Process for obtaining amplified fragments of nucleic acid from viral and subviral particles which contain RNA. The process comprises capturing the viral or subviral particles in a thermocycler tube, adding to the tube the necessary reagents to perform reverse transcription (RT) and enzyme amplification through the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), placing the tube in a thermocycler and applying the appropriate heat cycle to first perform RT and then PCR without the need to add reagents between the two reactions or to manipulate the sample tubes, in which the PCR uses a heat-stable DNA polymerase. The amplified fragments can be subjected to various analyses to detect, identify and type the viral or subviral particles. This process has application in diagnosis and molecular epidemiology studies.
