At the supplier's end is a central storage device (2) providing a data bank (8) of digitised music information connected through a server module (10) to a communications network (4). At the consumer's end is a terminating device (6) with a request module (12) connected through the communications network (4) to the central storage device (2). The server (10) and request (12) modules interact to enable requests for and transfer of selected music information to occur over the communications network (4). The transferred information format consists of core identification and structural data with additional layers containing the actual music information.
