<p>The halogenated alcohols have the formulaCF3-CXC1-CH(OH)-CH=C(CH3)2where X is bromo or chloro. The method includes reaction of acompound with the formula CF3CHXC1 and 3-methylbut-2-ene-1-al inthe presence of a strong base and inert solvent. The products areuseful intermediate compounds for the preparation of insecticides5-bromo-5-chloro-4-hydroxy-2-methyl-6,6,6-trifluorohex-2-ene is anew compound.</p>
