The staple spacer comprises an upper cylindrical part (2) which is supported on a part of the sheet edge, and has a lower part (3) composed of two jaws which are supported on a surface of the sheet. The staple is positioned to be in contact with another staple on a neighbouring sheet. The contact (15) between the upper and lower parts of each of the neighbouring staples is made along a generating line.
