The helmet has a solid outer wall (1) and the core of this contains a viscous fluid material (4). This is covered with a supple structure (7), made of polystyrene, a layer of foam material (8) and an inner fabric cover (9). The fluid material can be held in a sealed chamber and the chamber can be fixed to structure of the wall. The thickness of the fluid material can be varied at different zones of the wall.
