The method involves using at least one sensor arrangement (3) to detect a safety relevant parameter, especially acceleration. The sensor delivers a corresponding signal to a control unit (2), which generates at least one ignition command for at least one ignition unit (10.1,10.1x,10.n) depending on the sensor signal. The signal from the sensor arrangement is passed to the control unit through an evaluation unit (4), which sets a release signal if the sensor arrangement's signal exceeds a defined threshold. The ignition unit is only triggered if a release signal (f2) has been set.
