Production of a composite material for a switch tube involves heating, in a melting furnace, a stack consisting of (i) a contact plate body (3A), produced by pressing a mixture of highly electrically conductive metal powder and a refractory metal powder; (ii) a diffusion body, produced by pressing a mixture of refractory metal powder and a smaller quantity of highly electrically conductive metal powder; and (iii) a highly electrically conductive metal support (5A). The components of the diffusion body preferably diffuse into the contact plate body (3A) and into the support (5A). Preferably, the contact plate body (3A) consists of 65-35 wt.% refractory metal powder (preferably Cr) and 35-65 wt.% highly electrically conductive metal powder (preferably Cu) and the diffusion body consists of 97-80 wt.% refractory metal powder and 3-20 wt.% highly electrically conductive metal powder.
