The method involves detecting and evaluating the variations of the current drawn by the cutting tool drive (M). The current variations can be converted into voltage variations. All variations not lying within a defined frequency range are filtered (R3,C1;R4,C2) out of the detected variations so that only pulses characteristic of the cutting process remain. The number of pulses are counted or the durations of the pulses can be summed.
