<p>Lyotropic mesomorphic namatic or columnar media consisting of sheet-like molecules and non-polar solvents (e.g. alkanes, decahydronaphthalene and other hydrocarbons), having negative optical birefringence, for the construction of optical compensators for liquid crystal displays, is provided. The sheet-like molecules can be low molecular weight molecules, or polymers with sheet-like side groups, or polymerizable monomers resulting in polymers with sheet-like units, and represented by formulas (1-1), (1-30), etc., for example. In said formulas, R is an alkyl or alkoxy group in which methylene moiety may be replaced by O, S, COO, OCO, CH=CH or C C.</p> |
