POLYMERIZABLE ADAMANTANE DERIVATIVES AND PROCESS FOR PRODUCING THE SAME

High yields of polymerizable adamantane derivatives each having at least one polymerizable unsaturated group are produced by the esterification or amidation of a compound of general formula (1a) and a polymerizable unsaturated compound (e.g. an alcohol, a carboxylic acid or an amine) in the presence of a catalyst comprising a compound of a Group 3 element of the periodic table, such as a samarium compound. In said formula, R<1a> to R<4a> represent each a substituent selected from among inert atoms, inert groups, hydroxyl, carboxyl and amino, provided at least two groups of R<1a> to R<4a> are hydroxyl, carboxyl or amino.
