<p>Hair colouring compositions which are of reduced harshness to skinand hair are provided which comprise: (i) one or more developers selected from aminoaromatic systems capable of being oxidised and thereafter undergoing a single electrophilic attack, and (ii) one or more couplers selected from (A) phenols and naphthols having an active leaving group in the para position relative to the hydroxy group, (B) 1,3-diketone derivatives having an active leaving group, or (C) pyrazolone derivatives having an active leaving group, such that in the presence of an oxidizing agent the or each developer reacts with the or each coupler substantially only at the position having the active leaving group, and (iii) an inorganic peroxygen agent in an amount of from about 0.0001 to about 0.05 moles per 100 g of composition. Alternative compositions may contain higher levels of oxidizing agent provided that they have a pH below 6.</p> |
