Turning over compost comprises using a mobile or self propelled machine. The machine (1) retains at least part of the airborne material and fumes which are released by turning the compost. Also claimed is a machine (1) for the above process which has an agitator (18) which passes through and turns the compost, and behind which is an enclosure (2) which encloses the space above and retains the fumes and airborne material given off by the freshly turned compost. The machine (1) preferably has an enclosure (2) which retains the atmosphere around and above the freshly turned compost. The enclosure (2) comprises a closed hood (5) from which is suspended a flexible skirt (4) of overlapping e.g. plastic strips.
