The high voltage load switch has a contact system including a driven contact piece (9) and an opposing counter-contact piece (7), which is driven by an auxiliary operating drive. The contact piece and the counter-contact piece are coupled to the respective terminals (39,40) of the switch. The current path connecting the counter-contact piece to the switch terminal has a parallel current path provided by the drive coupling elements (10,11,13,27,28), which is interrupted by an insulation element.
